How to shield high gamma radiation from red bricks?

Red brick gamma background shielded by polymer plaster.

This is a rather interesting story about one of the Property Scan‘s first surveyed properties, where we found high levels of #gamma #radiation in construction materials.
About 4-5 years ago, a friend of ours had moved into a new #home and, rather out of curiosity than a genuine concern, invited us to inspect his house🏡 in Pancharevo. Since he had built it himself, we did not assume that there would be any low-quality materials. To our surprise, in the basement we have found red bricks with higher than usual #gamma #radiation – in the range of 0.360 – 0.430 µSv/h ☢. Since it was an area used for storage and not inhabited by people 🚷, we did not have significant #healthandsafety concerns about the results.
Last weekend he asked us to check the basement again, but this time after he had completed renovations and had done lime-cement plaster and then plastered with polymer, decorative plaster. We found that the plaster had shielded the bricks and now our #Geiger counter was reading gamma in the range of 0.160-0.200 µSv/h at the source.
An interesting result for us at Property Scan too was that the plastering reduced the background gamma at the source by 50%. 💡
